Clean and disinfect the surface where you will be handling the samples.
Gather all necessary materials and ensure the area is organized to avoid contamination.
Put on Sterile Gloves:
Carefully put on the sterile gloves provided in the kit.
Avoid touching any non-sterile surfaces with the gloves once they are on.
Hydrate the Sponge:
Open the Speci-Sponge Bag by tearing or cutting it at the top, being careful not to touch the inside of the bag.
Add the appropriate amount of sterile diluent (usually specified by your laboratory protocol) to the sponge. This is typically done to fully hydrate the sponge and activate the DE broth.
Allow the sponge to soak for 1-2 minutes to ensure it is fully saturated.
Sample Collection:
Once the sponge is hydrated, carefully remove it from the bag without contaminating the outer surface.
Use the sponge to swab the designated area, applying firm and consistent pressure as you move it across the surface. Ensure you cover the area thoroughly to collect a representative sample.
Return the Sponge to the Bag:
After collecting the sample, carefully place the sponge back into the Speci-Sponge Bag.
Seal the bag securely to prevent contamination or leakage.
Label the Sample:
Clearly label the bag with relevant information such as sample ID, date, time, and any other details required by your laboratory's protocol.
Transport and Storage:
If not processed immediately, store the sample in a cool environment, typically refrigerated at 2-8°C.
Transport the sample to the testing area or laboratory as soon as possible to maintain sample integrity.
Dispose of Used Materials:
Dispose of gloves and any other disposable materials according to your laboratory's biohazard waste protocols.
Clean and disinfect your work area after completing the sample collection process.
